The False Miracle at Saint-MerriEleven ruffians, commanded by a cunning leader, gather in the sacristy of the Chapelle Saint-Merri to execute a deceitful plot. Acting on behalf of a wealthy Duke who is infatuated with the beautiful Blanche-Mignonne, the group seeks to abduct the young woman without resorting to physical violence. To achieve this, they have prepared an elaborate ruse involving disguises. Donning flowing sky-blue robes, fake white beards, and metallic halos held in place by wire frames, they dress themselves as saints to impersonate religious figures. The gang successfully bribes the local sacristan, who helps them take the place of the actual statues within the church niches. The men wait in absolute stillness, posing as stone idols, ready to entrap the innocent adopted daughter of Maître Planchet as soon as she arrives for her daily devotional. As the chapel clock strikes six in the evening, Blanche-Mignonne enters the sanctuary.
She is momentarily unsettled when she finds the holy water reflecting red like blood, but she quickly dismisses this as a trick of the sunlight. Falling into a deep, meditative prayer, she fervently asks to see her deceased mother once more. The disguised men seize this moment to strike, moving within their niches and speaking with soft, angelic voices. They convince the susceptible young woman that they are performing a divine miracle to guide her to her mother. Consumed by religious fervor and a state of near-hypnosis, she willingly follows the saints toward the sacristy, where a carriage awaits to carry her away. The deception collapses when the group reaches the door. One of the impatient bandits lets slip a vulgar curse. When the leader strikes him for his clumsiness, the imposter’s fake beard comes loose, revealing the fraud to Blanche-Mignonne. Realizing the horror of her situation, she attempts to escape, only to find the chapel door barred.
With no other route, she climbs a massive, towering prie-dieu that reaches nearly to the ceiling. From the summit, she defies the criminals, swearing that she will plunge to her death on the stone floor below if they attempt to capture her. Paralyzed by the threat and fearing the Duke’s wrath if they deliver a corpse rather than their prize, the bandits hesitate. Blanche-Mignonne cries out for help until a young man, sword in hand, bursts into the church, challenging the kidnappers and bringing their scheme to an abrupt halt.
