2. The Raven

Le Corbeau — Résumé 🇺🇸 English

On a dreary December midnight, a weary narrator sits alone reading forgotten books while trying to escape his deep sorrow over the loss of his beloved Lenore. As he nods off, he hears a soft tapping at his chamber door. After convincing himself that it is merely a late visitor, he opens the door to find only darkness. He whispers the name Lenore into the quiet night, and an echo returns the same word. Troubled and curious, he hears another knock, louder than before, coming from his window lattice. When he pushes the shutter open, a majestic raven from days of yore enters his room with a lordly bearing. Without any hesitation, the black bird flies up and perches upon a sculpted white bust of Pallas directly above the doorway. The narrator, amused yet astonished by the stern composure of the ominous bird, asks for its name. To his absolute amazement, the raven speaks a single, distinct word in response. It declares that its name is Nevermore. He marvels at how clearly the creature articulates this strange title, noting that no living man has ever been blessed with seeing a bird perched above his chamber door bearing such a name. He pulls a cushioned seat up in front of the raven and sinks into the velvet, letting his mind drift into dark conjectures. As he gazes at the glowing eyes of the bird, he reflects on how he will never again press the violet cushions alongside Lenore. He suddenly feels the air grow dense, imagining that invisible seraphim have brought a soothing potion to help him forget his grief, but the raven bluntly crushes any hope by repeating its single gloomy phrase. Growing increasingly desperate, the narrator questions the feathered creature as a prophet or demon, asking if there is any balm in Gilead to relieve his suffering and whether he will ever embrace Lenore in a distant Eden. To every anguished inquiry, the raven responds with the same unchanging declaration. Overcome by grief and fury, the narrator commands the bird to leave and return to the plutonian shore of night, but the creature refuses to move. The raven remains perched forever above his chamber door, casting a shadow upon the floor from which his grieving soul shall never be lifted.
